In 2008, there were 4,721 permitted boats targeting Large Medium and Giant Bluefin for the commercial market. In 2008, General Category boats could land no more than three Large Medium/Giant Bluefin tuna per day over 73”. General category boats use Rod and Reel, Harpoon and Hand lines to harvest fish. Catches are sold through licensed dealers who tag and report each fish harvested. Retention and size limits are set annually by NMFS. In 2008, 379 General Category boats reported landings of 1,029 Large Medium and Giant Bluefin Tuna with an average weight of 504.2 lbs. These landings represent 31.8% of allocated General Category quota.
