In 2008, there were 26 permitted boats selectively harvesting Large Medium and Giant Bluefin Tuna with harpoon only. The annual quota and size limits are set by NMFS. In 2008, Harpoon boats could harvest two fish between 73 and 81 inches and unlimited fish over 81 inches per day due to the limited days available for harpooning which is extremely dependent on weather and the Bluefin Tunas limited time spent on the surface. In 2008, 14 Harpoon Category boats reported landings of 135 Large Medium and Giant Bluefin Tuna with an average weight of 359.1 lbs. These landings represent 35.9% of allocated Harpoon Category quota.
